Windows 7 – Cannot connect to network drive

Back from Spain! I will summarize my trip a bit later =)

A few days ago, i found that my office computer was getting slower and slower and it always hanged for a while whenever i did any action on the Windows Explorer. So i migrated all the stuff to a new computer and try the Windows 7 Professional which HKU provided. Note that this is not the RC version. =P

My first feeling on Windows 7 is quite good. Much much faster than Vista and all XP softwares such as Tortoise SVN, VM Player, DB Visualizer … could run without any problems.

Except one thing…
I cannot map to the network drive! It said the password is not valid!

so i asked the Google teacher and finally found the solution. here comes what u need.

1. Open the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel in your Windows 7 (NOT the network drive server)
2. Open the Local Security Policy
3. Select the Security Option under Local Policies
4. Choose Send LM & NTLM responses in Network security: LAN
manager authentication level

Enable Network Drive in Windows 7
 

All done =)

* Update on 2010-03-01: If your network drive host is a Windows 2000 server, you may need to upgrade it to SP4. Thanks for Parsant’s finding. =)

For windows 7 home premium i found this solution to work just fine.

For win Home Users:
you can edit the registry yourself by doing this:
1) open Notepad:
2) copy this text and past in notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
“lmcompatibilitylevel”=dword:00000002

3) save the file on your desktop (or anywhere else) as name.reg – “.reg” is important.
4) run the file and press yes on the 2 poppups.

Now it should be fixed.

For Windows 7 HOME PREMIUM:
1. Click “Start” on lower left of screen.
2. Click “Run” in the menu.
3. Type regedit then click “Ok”.
4. User Account Control warning may pop up – click “Yes”
5. Find folder “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” double click on it
6. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “SYSTEM”
and double click on it.
7. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find
“CurretControlSet” and double click on it.
8. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “CONTROL”
and double click on it.
9. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “Lsa” and
RIGHT CLICK ON THE Lsa folder.
10. Scroll down to “New” then select “DWORD (32-bit) Value”
11. The new item appears to the right of the folders you have been clicking on.
The name is highlighted as “New Value #1″
Change the name to LMCompatibilityLevel
12. Now RIGHT click on it “LMCompatibilityLevel” Then select “Modify”
13. Change the “Value data” from 0 to 1 then click “Ok”
14. At top right click on “File” then “Exit”
15. You are finished, and it should work.

1) in Kaspersky, check that Remote Desktop is allowed in trusted network
Kaspersky->Settings->Firewall->Settings>Packet Rules tab -> Remote Desktop
allow for Trusted Networks

2) Verify the ip address of the machine
Cmd -> ipconfig

3) run Notepad in Administrator mode (right-click run as administrator)
Open the Host file (Windows\System32\drivers\etc\host)
add entry with your machine name and its IP address

4) then try to ping your machine with its name

Correcting the time and date on the client and server may also help solving the password is not valid problem.

      2. I’ve found that the only solution that worked for me was resetting the TCP/IP. After resetting (see below) and rebooting, I reset my credential manager and all network connections began persisting normally with no further issues (as an “enterprise” connection).

        To reset your TCP/IP in Windows 7 you have to:

        Open an elevated Command prompt (Right Click CMD.EXE and choose Run as administrator)
        Type one of the following:
        netsh interface ipv4 reset
        netsh interface ipv6 reset
        Restart your Computer.

  3. I can’t find Local Security Policies anywhere on my Windows 7 64 bit computer. I looked under administrative tools and even did a search for “Local Security” and came up with nothing relevant.

  4. For some of us simpletons, we only have premium, which MS has taken away our local security policy (thus no gpedit.msc). Can you tell us what registry key to change?

    1. You can set registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel to 1. This changes the Secure Authentication method from NTLMv2 only to Send LM NTLM.

      if u cannot find the LMCompatibilityLevel, just create a new DWord with HEX value equals to 1.

  6. I’ve been using Win 7 Ultimate for about 6 weeks now and no problems so far. I still dual boot between XP and 7 now and then. Had to do that today and for some reason I could no longer get access to my network drives. It would prompt me for username and passowrd – no go. I even user name and password on the server still would not work. Your fix got it working right away. I would have never figured that out. I don’t know why that changed. I never set or changed this when I setup the system. Wierd. Thanks for the solution.

  7. I verified that the Local Security Policy on my Win2k Server is set to what you recommended but no dice. The server isn’t setup on a domain either. Can you think of anything else I might check? Thanks.

      You should set the Local Security Policy on Win7 instead of your file server which is Win2000.

      5. Yes I have already 30 computers in this network with windows xp (all I can connect to server) and this is the first pc with windows 7. It is not asking for the username and password also when you double click the server which you can see in network workgroup…

        • 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
        • 2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Local Security Policy.
        • 3. Click Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.
        • 4. Double-click each item under User Rights Assignments to see whether the item contains the Power Users group. When you find a policy item that contains the Power Users group, click to clear the Power Users check box and then click OK.
        • 5. Restart the computer and review the Winlogon.log file and Event Viewer to make sure that the error messages no longer occur.

      7. Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay.. I have tried this as you said. But could not find the POWER USERS GROUP in any of the policy items. I have tried this in my windows 7 professional edition system. But in Basic edition computer this Local Security policy is not available! In both I could not connect to my Server yet…

      8. Let me verify the problem u got now.


        1. when u try to connect to the network drive, it prompts for username and password.
        2. then u enter the username and password.
        3. you cannot connect becoz of         “the server is not accessable” instead of “invalid password”
         
        is that the problem u got?
         
        if you got “the server is not accessable”, probably this is not related to the local security policy. would that be some firewall or other network configuration problems?

  11. Recently I bought a PC with “Windows 7 home BASIC edition” and want to connect it with some shared folders that are in a computer with Windows 2000 server.¶ But when attempt to connect I do not see anybody in the network, neither the server, nor no other equipment in the net that shares folders, only the new pc.

    I already proved with:
    – To place the same name of the group
    – uses the Regedit to place compatibilitylevel = 1
    – I try to ping the server… and I can´t
    – I used Netview and only me
    It would thank some help.

      1. Hi ykyuen, thank you for your time…, no I didn´t set the conection to “home network”. I use the option “work network”.

        The others machines in the network can ping each other, the only one that can not ping the others is the Win7 machine, but I can use internet over the network in the win 7 machine

    Hi Frank, could you try to modify the Network from Work Network to Home Network. and see if the win7 machine can ping other computers and vice versa?

    1. Hi Frank, I think u have to solve the network problem. you should be able to ping the server ip before u can connector to its network drive.

      by the way, you may need to upgrade your win2000 server to SP4.

    I’m having the following problem, I’m able to map a network drive without any issues, but when I log off and back on it doesn’t connect automatically, I have to type my id and password. The laptop is on a domain, Win7 enterprise.

      1. Even if i select “save password” when i mapped the network drive, the next time i reboot or log off the machine it doesn’t connect the drives. I would have to click on the drive and type my user name and passowrd and then it connect to the drives.

      2. The login credential should be stored in the Credential Manager in the Control Panel. I think you can check if your username and password were stored there. if not found, just add one for your network drive.

        I try that and it did not work. But I changed the Kerberos registry key to the following.

        [HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\kerberos\Parameters]
        “MaxPacketSize”=dword:1
        “MaxTokenSize”=dword:ffff

        Once I reboot it, My computer log in to all the network drive without any issues.

    1. which OS is your network drive using? if u are using win2000, u many need to update the service pack 4.

      actually i found the my win7 may not be able to connect to some old samba server. but i didn’t find out the exact reason.

        connection failed (total commander)
        -> tried with ip or hostname, dns is routed correctly, i see the ip adress in the connection window

        site cannot be displayed… (firefox, internet explorer)

        remote desktop:
        cannot connect or something (my system language is german, sorry)

        btw: windows firewall is off, no other firewalls (just for testing of course)

        the damn thing is that i pull out my win7 drive, insert my xp drive and it works like a charm…

  26. Hi, I have 4 pcs in my network. One XP, one vista and one windows 7 home basic and the 4th which is new on windows 7 premium (32bit).
    I am trying to connect it to the network so I can see our server and files, with all other pc’s I simply map network drive and see the network and connect. With this new one, it keeps asking for a password when there is no password set up for the network drive.
    I have taken the action described above (changed the ‘Send LM & NTLM responses in Network security: LAN) and also looked to see if there were any power users (there were none).

    BUT… when I try to map network drive again, it keeps asking for a password. I didnt set up a password for the drive I want to map so don’t know where to go from here. I’ve never been asked for a password before. does it have something to do with windows 7 premium version rather than home as the windows 7 home one was easy to set up, no problems.

    All advice appreciated! Thanks (p.s. am not that technical so step by step is much appreciated.)

    1. Hi Vanessa,

      It seems that you have a shared folder on the file server which can be accessed by all computers in the same network. do you know the OS of the file server? if it is also windows, you can try to add the Everyone permission to that shared folder and grant full control to it. please refer to the new picture i added in this post for you.

  27. I should also say, when I type in the actual path into map a network drive (instead of trying to find it the usual way of just seeing it pop up and connect), I get the error…

    I’m using a wired connection, all pc’s connecting to the same router so not sure what is wrong with DNS? Again, not 100% sure what all this means as a bit beyond my skills but happy to follow any instructions!

    1. i forget to update the post. now you can find the new picture i added. but if you cannot access that server. you can change the permission.

      i am also not 100% sure about the problem. but i have found 2 articles which may help. i suggest you check the following 2 settings.
      1.Is your new windows 7 computer in Home Network, Work Network or Public Network? Try to set it to Home Network and try again.
      2. You may need to set all the computers including the file server with the same WORKGROUP.

  28. Hi,
    I tried to use a computer(win 7 pro) mapped to PC1(vista), I got the error message “Logon failure: unkonwn user name or bad password.” Then I used the same win 7 computer mapped to another vista PC2 and It worked. So i think the problem may be in PC1. All the PCs are not in the domain. So the user names and passwords are local. I already double check PC1’s username and password(which the current user uses). I tried couple things, such as using a vista computer to map to that PC1 and I also tried using both IP and computer name.I still cannot figure out why I cannot map to this specific PC1. Any sugestion? Is there anything to do with firewall? Thanks!

    im having problem connecting to a network drive. when i ping it from command prompt, i get a response but not when i double click on the drive, it says the network locatin cannot be reached. I was having access to the drive in the morning and then dont know it says its not accessible. Im using win7 premium. All the setups have been done for connecting to network drive..

      If it is inaccessible suddenly, that means it should not be windows 7 setting problem. would that be something related to the network setting like firewall?

      and you can check if there is any action being taken recently which may cause the inaccessible problem.

    We should see on the client application to start.

    I try the last version of psexec ( ver. 1.98 ) .
    I install this version on the server and I try.
    All the problems are resolve ( connection and graphs ).

Speaking of problems, I have a laptop that connects to my network with no problems. I recently bought another laptop, but I can not connect to my network at all, I already tried troubleshooting and a lot other things with no luck. It detects the network with all the bars as excellent, but every time I try to connect, I get this message:
    “Windows could not connect to “get yout own” (thats the name of my network). Can you pleeeeease help?

      2. Do you have any MAC address filter in the router setting?

        And have you ever tried to connect other not Win7 computers to the router? if the result is also negative, that means it is not related to the Win7 configuration and probably it is an network issue.

  41. My first laptop connects with no problems, runs on Windows vista. The new one, I can not connect, runs on windows 7.
    BTW I’m able to pull a mac address on my command prompt window and I still get the message:
    “Windows was unable to connect to “get your own”.
    One other thing, my neighbor has an unprotected network, and on that one, I’m able to connect. I do not know what’s wrong with this picture.

    1. The mac address is your network card identity. you can print it in the command prompt by ipconfig even if there is no network connection. and if you can connect to your neighbor’s network, that’s probably means that it should be not related to your win 7 settings.

      A mac address filter is the configuration in the router such that only specified mac addresses could be connected to the internet through the router.

      Have you tried to log in to the router admin page and check the setting?

      2. I tried to search the issue in google and it seems that there are quite a lot of problems about connecting win7 to a netgear router. one of them is the hardware incompatibility between the network card and the router as in the following post.

  42. I read all the problems other people had on the post on your last reply, and I’m now convinced that the router is the problem. Compatibility issues with windows 7.
    I tested a new linksys router a relative of mine just bought, and boom! I connected right away. What I’m doing now, I will dump the netgear router I have (Will never buy netgear again) and get a new linksys,

    1. That means your win7 machine fails to map the server name to IP address. DId you turn on the Win7 Network Discovery?

      if it is already turned on, i guess it maybe DNS problem. you can try to add the server name and IP mapping to your local machine hosts file. it could be found somewhere like C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.

    but just keep promp out password, can help to solve tis problem.
    (our server never do setting for username and password)

        when mapping a new drive, keep promp out ask to key in passowrd,

        but from since we never do this setting on the Win NT Server.

        1. You have set the local security policies in the new Win7 PC as i mentioned in this post but it does not work. (You may need to restart the win7 to apply the new changes.)
        2. Old Win XP can connect to the share drive an no password is needed becoz the shared drive is not password protected.

        are the above statement correct?
        if both are positive, try to go to winNT and enable the guest account.
        if it prompt for username and password, try the following
        1. empty username and empty password
        2. username = guest and empty password

        if the above approach still could not solve the problem. try to access the win NT and change the setting as follow.
        Local Computer Policy > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts: Classic – local users authenticate as themselves.

        Actually ppl are suggesting different solution and i think u have to try it one by one. for more information. pls refer to I can’t map a network drive from Windows 7, using the exact same settings that work fine with Vista or XP

  48. Having had to make the jump to Windows 7 because of technology changes, my perfectly working Windows 98se home network drives were unable to be connected to the new Windows 7 machine. After a week of searching google and other forums to try to find the solution and 11 reinstalls of Windows 7 later after putting on other peoples ‘fixes’ I came upon your post.
    It worked first time and your instructions are so clear, very many thanks.
    I was beginning to think that Windows 7 was going to the same place as Millenium, XP, and Vista – the bin.

    For win Home Users:

    you can edit the registry yourself by doing this:

    1) open Notepad:

    2) copy this text and past in notepad:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    “lmcompatibilitylevel”=dword:00000002

    3) save the file on your desktop (or anywhere else) as name.reg – “.reg” is important.

    4) run the file and press yes on the 2 poppups.

    Now it should be fixed.

    While I have scanned info exhibited here, none of it seems applicable to my problem. If I’m mistaken, simply point me to the appropriate post.

    On network 1 (100Base-T) , I have computer A (Windows 7 32bit) and computer B (Windows 7 32bit).

    On network 2 (1000BASE-T), I have computer A (Windows 7 32bit), Computer C (Windows 7 64bit) and NASes N1 and N2.

    Can I configure Computer A so that I can from computer B transfer files to and delete files on Computer C and NAS N1 and N2?

    I’ve tried shortcuts, mapping network drives and symbolic links to no avail. I’ve yet to get Remote Desktop to work, but I’m not sure it would solve my problem.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Just wanted to pass along my THANKS. This is the only site that I found to fix the windows 7 HOME PREMIUM network issue.
    With hardly any experience in the registry, I thought I would list step by step your fix for people like myself that need a little extra instruction.
    1. Click “Start” on lower left of screen.
    2. Click “Run” in the menu.
    3. Type regedit then click “Ok”.
    4. User Account Control warning may pop up – click “Yes”
    5. Find folder “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” double click on it
    6. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “SYSTEM”
    and double click on it.
    7. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find
    “CurretControlSet” and double click on it.
    8. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “CONTROL”
    and double click on it.
    9. Now on the same left side below the folder you clicked on find “Lsa” and
    RIGHT CLICK ON THE Lsa folder.
    10. Scroll down to “New” then select “DWORD (32-bit) Value”
    11. The new item appears to the right of the folders you have been clicking on.
    The name is highlighted as “New Value #1”
    Change the name to LMCompatibilityLevel
    12. Now RIGHT click on it “LMCompatibilityLevel” Then select “Modify”
    13. Change the “Value data” from 0 to 1 then click “Ok”
    14. At top right click on “File” then “Exit”
    15. You are finished, and it should work.

    2. Hi! I have a laptop running Win7 Home Premium, and whenever I try to connect to our network drive it asks for a nonexistant Username and password.
      I’ve tried this solution along with the .reg notepad solution but neither worked.
      I can read files if I type ‘Guest’ as the username but then I can’t write to the drive.
      Any help would be very much appreciated!

      1. if u can connect with the guest account that means there should be no problem in the connection.

        i suggest you to check your network drive folder/file permission. like set it to read/writable to everyone.

    Thanks for the help, but unfortunately my problem is still there. I’ve been googling for the solution for a while, this is my problem and the workarounds I’ve found so far, hopefully they’re useful to someone else:

    I’m using Win7 Home Premium (SP1, fully updated) and I map two of my network drives from a Netgear NAS. Apparently there’s a race in the Win7 system initialization between the network service and the “mounting” service. As a result, sometimes win7 tries to mount the drives before the network is up, and fails. It happens specially if you’re using wifi or if you try logging in immediately after you see the login screen (even with a wired connection, which is my case).

    If I go to windows explorer, the drives are there, unmounted (“with the red “x” indicating the error). I double-click on the drive and it mounts, without any problem.

    The only two (ugly) workarounds are:

    1. Add shortcuts to all mapped drives to the startup menu of each user, thus opening a windows explorer window at login that access the drives (the user will have to close the windows after the login).

    2. Install a third-party program that does that in the background. I didn’t test this solution because I don’t trust programs from unknown sources which I haven’t build myself, but it should work.

    This problem appears to be known for a while (plenty of threads discussing the problem on MS forums), but MS as usual doesn’t care…

    1. Update: the workaround is not reliable, it doesn’t work all the time, so the problem is still there. Since it’s a timing issue (race between the services), the proper fix is to change the “mounter” service to wait for the network before it tries to mount the network units, but I couldn’t find a way to configure that… I guess I’m stuck with this problem until MS decides to fix it. 😦

It seems that the netgear routers have quite a lot of problems on mapping network drive with Win 7. Finally he resolved the problem by using another brand of router.

    I need some help! I am running Win 7 Home Premium. I have tried the suggested solutions regarding the registry. My network hard drive just shows as “other device” and when I click on it, it take me to the soho nas site. It doesn’t show it as a hard drive. My other Win 7 computers can access the hard drive so I know it works. Could there be another setting that I need to adjust? Also when I was running Win XP I could access the network hard drive wirelessly, but now with Win 7 the only way I’m able to connect to the network drive is through a hard wire connection. Please HELP!!!

    by the way my server is windows 2000, and i am planning to change it to windows server 2003,. the program for my accounting and inventory is a old one “visual foxpro 2.6 and visual foxpro 7 and 9.”

  66. hello I get a not accessible (Error Code 0x80070035) when i try to connect to an XP shared folder from win7 64 sp1. I tried it to connect with \\servername and with \\serverip. The two computers are on the same subnet, same workgroup and can ping each other. It is interesting that a virtual machine (xp mode) running in the win7 system can see the shared folder on the xp machine. The firewall is disabled on win7 and antivirus (avast) has been unistalled.

    I am really at a loss now. Please please help. I have called the helpdesk and tons of emails have been replying to n fro but no solution is found.
    I have bought a 1TB Iomega Home Media Network HDD for 2 months already and I still cannot use the device. The problem is my windows 7 HOME cannot detect the device. Even though I am using the Network HDD connecting directly to my PC, my PC still cannot detect it. I have formated my PC and I have followed the solution by changing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
    Create a new DWORD value with the following properties: NAME: LmCompatibilityLevel
    VALUE: 1
    However, it still doesnt work for me. I am at a loss now. I am using Norton anti-virus.

    I used the device on another PC with Windows XP. It immediately detects the HDD and works fine. Therefore, I think there is something wrong with my windows 7 Home settings.

        I couldn’t install the Home Media Network Drive’s configuration software that comes with the box. Whenever I tried to install the software, it always keep shutting down halfway of the process. I then went to the Iomega forumn to install the driver software. But my PC still could not detect the HDD.

      2. From the comments in the above link, you can try

        1. Browse the install CD and install the Retrospect manually, and then network manager and Iomega QuickProtect.

        2. Try right click and install the above applications in compatibility mode.

        The retrospect and Home manager were installed successfully. When I restarted my PC, I was able to see the HDD in “Computer folder” but however when I clicked on the HDD, the connection breaks and the icon of the HDD disappear. I restarted again, the HDD couldnt not connect to my PC again. (The connection is direct connect from the HDD to PC).
        Really frustrating, I have been trying to solve for a month+ but still couldnt find a solution.. Kindly help and I really appreciate it..

  72. I have 2 laptops and 1 PC running on W7 Home Premium. My work server runs on a sql database and I use Access 2000 as a front-end client to connect. For 10-years in business, no problems connecting to my server … until W7.

    Laptop1 (Acer) is almost 2-years old. I recall researching somehwat of a minor fix to get connecting – nothing major. My new PC (all-in-one Acer) took me 4-days to find the fix to get connecting. 2-steps got me there: the post above for LmCompatibilityLevel value:1, and then changed ODBC to Target: syswow64\odbcad32.exe and Start: SysWow64. Just as I was ready to give up on W7 Home Premium and upgrade to Pro, this worked!

    New laptop (Toshiba – again, same operating system) will not connect. I repeated all of these steps, nothing. I launch Access 2000 program, prompts for database password, and it simply hangs with no error message.

    I have removed Norton Antivirus and disables all W7 firewalls. Been researching this now for 3-days. I have no idea why 3-different machines all on the same W7 operating system act completely differently with the same technology.

    Any suggestions? I apprecate your time and feedback.

      I think maybe we could narrow the problem first. is there any file server service like samba running on your server? if yes, could you connect to that network drive from your Toshiba labtop? if the result is positive, that implies the problem is not related to the network settings.

      And what database server are you running? could you connect to it using other desktop client?

    1. that means your server is running windows, rite? in that case, you could try to share any folder and see if your win7 could connect to that network folder.

      by the way, it seems that sql server 2000 is not quite compatible with win7

      “SQL Server 2000 setup is not supported on Windows 7, but later versions of SQL Server clients (such as the SQL Server Native Client, SQL Server Native Client 10.0, and recent versions of Microsoft Data Access Components shipped with Windows) are supported on Windows 7, and are able to connect to SQL Server 2000. Does the software you are using support any of those connectivity options?”

  74. I am aware that W7 (64-bit) doesn’t support Sql 2000 (32-bit). I am stumped b/c I got W7 “Home Premium” connected to my server by changing the ODBC settings (as I mentioned above), yet the same work-around fails on the new machine (same operating system). It’s definitely compatible b/c I’m connecting to the same server on two machines both on W7.

    W7 Pro is a 32-bit AND 64-bit operating system. Any thoughts on if an upgrade can solve this problem?

  75. Great hint about changing LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 in the registry (it was set to 3 in mine!). It fixed the same issue in Vista Home Premium, which suddenly stopped connecting to remote shares on my XP-based file server, giving that “incorrect password” error. All the other Vista and Win7 machines in my network were still able to connect. I was close to restoring the system from a backup image, when I came across your post.
    No idea why that value suddenly changed today – must be one of those mysteries of Microsoft…
    Though I did recently install Corel WinDVD 11, I can’t think of a reason why it would change LmCompatibilityLevel.

    You seem to be my only hope as I searched and searched and can’t solve this problem.

    I recently bought a Lacie LaCinema Classic HD drive which has network share ability, but I can’t access its hard drive files from my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit PC.

    Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
    – The device is connected to the local network via cable directly to the router.
    – The device shows under Network as a Media Device only. Double-click leads to a config. page of the device.
    – I CAN access the device’s media through WMP (via the device’s media server). However the device share does not appear and I can’t access the hard drive files via explorer..
    – Ultimate frustration: I CAN normally access the folder share under Network on my girlfriend’s Windows Vista PC!!
    – I’ve tried all the suggestions of changing the local security policies but still cannot have access to the device’s share!

    Have any suggestions?

        Yes I’ve installed the network assistant but it also fails to access the device’s files, I only have access to the device’s web dashboard.

        Also, I forgot to mention on the previous post, but I CAN also access the device through Network via the Windows Vista installed “inside” my Win7 PC with MS Virtual PC, so I guess the problem is not on the network adapters but on some network configuration on my Windows 7.. :S

        I also tried to shutdown Windows Firewall and MS Security Essentials but still no access!

        Any more suggestions?

      2. i found some solutions on web but i am not sure if it works for you
        solution 1:
        1. Go to control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management

        2. See if you could find the LaCie drive

        3. Assign a drive letter to it

        solution 2:
        1. Control Panel > Administrative Tool > Computer Management

        2. In left Pane you have to click on “Systeme Tools” after click on “Device Manager”

        3. plug your external hard disk (for me it’s 1T Lacie) in computer and start it

        4. in the “Computer management” Window one device appear when the computer detect the new device who plug.

        5. in the Device Panel , click on “Other devices”

        6. “LaCie Hard Drive USB” appear, Right-click on icon

        7. select “Update Driver Software” and choose “Search automatically for updated driver software”

        8. Finally the “Other devices” icon will disappear and your External Hard Disk go in “Disk Drives”

        solution 3:
        1. Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

        2. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:

        3. Point to New , and then click DWORD Value .

        4. Type EnableLinkedConnections , and then press ENTER.

        5. Right-click EnableLinkedConnections , and then click Modify .

        7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

        First of all, thanks for your reply!

        I actually found the solution elsewhere, but I’m sharing in case of anyone having the same problem! I think the problem was with NetBIOS and had nothing to do with the device’s drive itself or windows version.

        I followed the solution in here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903267/en-us
        by deleting the DhcpNodeType value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBt\Parameters.
        I rebooted and now the device shows in the Network and I can access the drive’s folders in explorer and through LacieAssistant.

  85. A few things to also try if running Win7 Premium and Kaspersky are:
    1) in Kaspersky, check that Remote Desktop is allowed in trusted network
    Kaspersky->Settings->Firewall->Settings>Packet Rules tab -> Remote Desktop
    allow for Trusted Networks

    2) Verify the ip address of the machine
    Cmd -> ipconfig

    3) run Notepad in Administrator mode (right-click run as administrator)
    Open the Host file (Windows\System32\drivers\etc\host)
    add entry with your machine name and its IP address

    4) then try to ping your machine with its name

I have a window 7 pro in active directory, and try to map network drive of our university, I believe they use windows2008 server, the folder give the user read, excutive and folder list permission, in windows xp, I can map it without any problem, but in windows 7 pc, it will not allow to map it, keep asking the password, if the folder give the user full permission, I can map it correctly. I tried all the way you posted, local policy, registry change, it did not work, could you please give some suggestion? I could not change the server side, I only can change the client side and the permission of the shared folder. thank you very much.

    1. Have you raised the issue to the university technical supports? As you have mentioned, changing the permission can solve the problem. I think the support could help setting a proper permission for all users.

      2. I found 2 posts which may be relavant to your case. Seems that you have to set the folder permission to full control if you want to mount it on network.
        Can not map a network drive because Windows Security asks for my password but then does not accept it

    2. Perfect solution. Yes, problem solved! I checked my Server Time and Date and it showed 01 Jan 2000. I just set time and date for today (07 Jul 2013 and from this point on, I could connect all Windows 8 machines to the server again. Important to say that it made difference just for the Win 8 machines. All Windows 7 machines could connect to the server even with wrong date and time set on the server. Thanks!

  91. Trying to connect to a shared folder on W2003 server from Windows 7 Pro. But, Win7 does not display the username and password boxes to enter the credentials. Any idea how to resolve this issue. All I get is a window that says,”Enter your password”, but no boxes to enter the username or password. No issue in connecting from WinXP.

So I tried everything (I have windows 7 home premium) and i got to where I could access the server by typing in the username/password (I had to do some looking around to find what windows set up as my username, which for some reason happened to be “system”) but every time I restart I have to log back in to access any server files. What (FINALLY) worked for me was to use the credential manager clicked windows credentials and added “\\server” and the username/password that let me access it, and now I no longer have to log in every time. Hopefully this eases some other user’s headaches.

    I really need your advice in this. I have the same situation as the above case which is my Windows 7 wont connect to file server on Windows Server 2000. The only different is that both PC and Server are using different domain.
    I’ve tried all the suggestions above but I still can’t connect to the file server.
    Is that due to the different domain? but even so, my Windows XP can connect to the file server successfully. I really looking forward for your advice….

    I have windows 7 premium laptop and am trying to connect to qnap NAS, I can connect to it via the web browser, I can connect to it via ftp and I can connect to it through windows media player, but when I try and map a drive to it or start –> run to the ip of the nas it gives me error code: 0x800704b3, saying the path does not exist or typed incorrectly,

    I also have a windows 7 ultimate laptop that maps the NAS QNAP drive without any issues,

    I have tried the registry fix’s above and also tried disabling anti virus\firewall and windows defender but no change. I also tried connecting to the network via the LAN and Wifi separately, I also tried different settings within the homegroup window but the windows Premium laptop just wont connect to the network share!?

    Any Ideas? Cheers!!

  100. If you want map drive from Windows 2008 server to Mac OS X Yosemite, you need to change in Windows Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel de 2 para 3. Wok fine for me after 2 weeks search a solution.

  101. Really an old post. Butni hope it can help.

    I have a network with …
    1. Domain Server (windows 2003 sp3)
    2. File Server (Windows 2003 sp2)
    3. Mixed OS clients (winxp n win7)

    I had everything working up until last week when we had a power outage and ever since all the clients on Win7 are not able to access the Shared Files.

    Details…
    1. Users on XP have no issues. They can access the files and use our ERP application
    2. Users on Win7 can only access the files if they type in the hostname ex: //hostname but if they type ex: //IPADDRESS they get a prompt for username and password and even after entering the right credentials it keeps asking for the password and does not connect.
    3. Users on Win7 are not able to connect to ERP

    Troubleshooting I’ve done:
    1. Ive confirmed that the users are properly authenticating to the domain.
    2. I’ve tried the user working on XP on Win7 it logs in but can’t connect to the file server over IP and ERP does not work
    3. I’ve tried win7 user on win xp and it logs in and everything works as it should.
    4. I’ve dejoined/rejoined the win7 pc along with deleting the account and computer from AD and no help.
    5. I got a fresh new win7 installed pc and joined it to the domain and no help

    I’m going crazy over this. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here?
